Sock Yarn Swap Round 1

May 26, 2008 by lambiebird

Check out all these goodies!  It was like Christmas a few days ago when I got a box in the mail from my sock-yarn swap partner, Becky, a.k.a. “Montanalamb”.  Thanks so much, Becky!  I loved my surprise!  I can’t wait to start a pair of socks with this beautiful purple yarn (for me)!!!  I just have to finish the pair I’m working on for my husband first!  (Picture to be posted next).  Besides the purple yarn, Becky sent me some yummy candy (which is now ALL GONE)!!, a very cool parrot pen, a cute tape-measure, some yarn wash, and a can of tea.  Really great stuff!  This was my first yarn swap and certainly not my last!  What fun!

My Sock Wars iii WEAPON!

My Sock Wars iii WEAPON!, originally uploaded by lambiebird.

These are the socks I mailed to my target about 10 days ago. I felt bad being a “killer”, but it had to be done! Amazingly, I’m still “alive” in the game, but I’m expecting a package in the mail any day which will bring about my swift and certain death! Until then – I’m still in the game!

Here’s the back of the sock. The brown color is the waste yarn that will be removed when I add in the heels. This was a LOT of work! I’m not real fast when it comes to cables, so I’m happy that I got this far in less than a week – especially since the week was such a busy one for me. In fact, I think I could have made it to Round 5 if the pattern had been released on a weekend!

I know it’s been awhile since I’ve written. That’s because I’ve been busy knitting these! This was such a busy week that I didn’t have a chance to make it to the next round. So I kept knitting anyway and figured I better get a picture of the socks in progress tonight!

My plan is to finish these and get them dyed in “shades of autumn” BEFORE the May 1 deadline so I can enter the creative contest still! I’ve been fortunate enough to have a sock entry in the first 3 rounds – so I want these to make it, too!

DONE AT LAST!!!!!!!!!! I finished these at 6:45 pm. I was the 9th or 10th person in my division to finish. Only 12 go on to round 4, so now I have a secured place in Sock Madness round 4.

It was HARD finishing these! But I have to remember that I started them on Thursday night, just 3 days ago, so this has to be a record for me. I NEVER thought I’d be able to finish a pair of socks in 3 days – especially a pattern as tricky as this one.

The pattern really wasn’t that hard, but since I was using two strands of laceweight yarn I kept messing up and dropping stitches and having to go back and pick them up. I made a lot of mistakes, but at least I finished in time.

I really never thought I’d make it to round 4 of Sock Madness. When I first started this competition I set a goal to make it to round 2. Now I’m going on to round 4!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Howver, given the week ahead I’ll be surprised if I am even able to pick up a pair of knitting needles when the pattern comes out. It’s an extremely busy week at work, so I don’t expect to get much done during the week. And I don’t think I’m up for spending another entire weekend knitting!

Knitting has always been relaxing and meditative for me. I find that when I’m rushing to get something finished (especially for a competition), some of the fun is missing. My competitive spirit emerges and I become obsessed with finishing!

I’d have to say that Sock Madness has been a good experience, and I’ve met some nice people who are part of it – so even if I don’t make it to round 5 I’ll be happy that I’ve gone this far!

It’s been awhile since I’ve written. That’s because I’m SO BUSY KNITTING! I started these on Thursday night and I’d say I’m about halfway finished. My goal is to finish by Sunday! Onward to knitting . . . . !
